About The Project

For the kinetic typography video project, we had to chose a scene from either a movie or a television show that featured a converstation between at least two people, but it could include more. I brainstormed a bunch of ideas, which were:

  • Star Wars
  • Toy Story
  • Scrubs
  • Spongebob
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Momento
  • The Matrix
  • The Godfather
  • The Usual Suspects
  • Westworld
  • Black Mirror
  • Better Call Saul
  • Office Space
  • Back to the Future

In the end, I narrowed it down to Star Wars, Toy Story, The Godfather, and Better Call Saul. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but I've done quite a few projects on Star Wars so I decided to leave that idea behind. Toy Story seemed to be an obvious choice among people, so that went too. I was left with lakehouse argument between Fredo and Michael Corleone in the Godfather, and an argument scene from Better Call Saul.

I decided to go with Better Call Saul. This was due to some quick thumbnail sketching and coming up with potential ideas, but I wanted to do something a bit different and unknown. I'm a big fan of Better Call Saul, and the show lets color and symbols play a big role, so I was excited to use that as for inspiration for my video.

The scene is a bit complicated, but basically, there is a police officer named Mike who is contacted by a gang member, named Nacho. Nacho's boss, Tuco, has been off the rails lately, and Nacho is looking for a way to get rid of him. Nacho convices Mike to purposely get in a fight with Tuco, so the police show up, and Tuco will be arrested. I made about five pages of thumbnail sketches, or about 75 frames, in order to plan the video, and then I got to work.

The final product came out pretty well I believe. I'm happy with it. I really wanted to include vector images in the video so I worked really hard on that, but I tried to balance it with good typography. This was my first time working in depth with After Effects, it was the last MAJOR Adobe program I wasn't too familiar with, as it always seemed overwhelming to me, but after this project I feel reletively comfortable with it. The project was a great opener for After Effects, and I'm really glad I pushed myself as I learned a lot. I'm excited to do more.

The last part of the project was to create a trailer website, which is what you're presumably reading this on now. I'm satisfied with this as well. It's nothing crazy but I think it catches the vibe of the show a bit, especially with the colors, and it communicates information well. This was a good refresher in HTML, and I'm excited to learn more JQuery as well. I'm extremely happy with my work over the course of this project, I learned quite a bit.
